SCHOOL NEWS

Healthy Snack Program at Edna Maguire
The Healthy Snack program is run by one of our beloved P.E. teachers, Schuyler Harvey, and is funded by our PTA. Ms. Harvey orders organic fruit from Earl's Organics, whose offerings include apples, pears, oranges, kiwi, raspberries, and whatever is in season. She washes and cuts the fruit and puts it out in the mornings on a lunch table that rotates among the different grades. The kids can grab a piece of fruit in the morning and it is usually gone by the end of first recess. It is not intended to replace a snack from home, but offers a quick, healthy pick-me-up. We really appreciate Schuyler's cheerful commitment to this program and our kids.

K-1 Play Structure Update
Fundraising for the new K/1 structure is going extremely well, thanks to many Edna families who have supported this important project thus far. The complete list of donors is now on our school website here: http://www.ednamaguire.org/playstructurek-1.html, and will continue to be updated as more families contribute to our goal. If you have not had a chance to donate to the K/1 play structure then we have an opportunity for you! Donation Day is this Wednesday, December 12, at afternoon pick-up. Bring your checkbook and help us build a new, larger play structure that will support our kids' physical development. Mark your calendars!

Architectural drawings of the fantastic new play structure are posted in the office. Come take a look and see what a wonderful environment is waiting to be built.

Holiday Toy Drive
In keeping with tradition, Edna Maguire is sponsoring a toy drive for the holiday season. This year we are collaborating with the Toys for Tots Program and the Ritter Center in San Rafael. Ritter Center has been serving the needy and homeless in our community since 1980. We are asking that our Edna Maguire families donate one or more unwrapped toys for children between the ages of 2 and 14. Donations can be placed in the barrels by the front office until this Friday, December 14.

Thanks for helping to make a child smile. Happy Holidays to all! If you have any questions, please contact Valerie Wynn at 389-1144 or howval@comcast.net.

GARDEN UPDATE
Our seeds are already coming up in full force. The fava beans went crazy and look terrific. There was lots of excitement this week as boxes of new tools, a greenhouse starter kit, and other gardening goodies arrived compliments of the National Gardening Association's Adopt a Garden program. Thank you again to the NGA and Smith and Hawken, which sponsored our garden for the program. Many years of use are in store for all our new supplies.

We are very excited about our first garden work day this year, scheduled for Saturday, January 19, from 9:00 a.m. until noon. We will be replanting a dozen apple trees in the orchard and begin the winter pruning of trees, shrubs and roses.

The Garden Advisory Board meets the last Friday of the month at 7:45 a.m. We meet that early so that we can include teachers to discuss the plans for the garden. Please feel free to attend a meeting or consider being on the board. We need everyone's help since the garden exists only because of volunteers, so no volunteers means no garden.

A special thanks to Linda Dunne, who keeps updating our web site with garden news and important dates. You can always check on the latest garden news on our web site.

KIDDO INFO

Kiddo! Annual Giving Campaign Need Donations ASAP
Overall participation in Kiddo!'s Annual Giving Campaign stands at only 65 percent as of November 30, which is significantly lower than in years past. Edna Maguire's participation rate is 65 percent, which is right at the district average, but still means that 101 Edna families have not yet participated in this school year's fundraising campaign. We need everyone's participation and we welcome contributions at whatever level works for your family! While Kiddo! asks for a contribution of $600 per student to cover the costs of arts programs and other services provided, we gratefully accept all gifts of any amount. Although our average gift is $600, many families actually donate more, which helps cover the costs for families who might not be able to give at this level! Thank you one and all for your participation!

Please go to www.kiddo.org and make your 100-percent tax deductible donation online today or send your check to Kiddo! at 409 Sycamore Avenue. Kiddo! has committed to providing art, dance, music, poetry, and drama to our schools, but it can't happen without your help.
