Winter School Lunch Programs
This season, we will be offering both the PTA Lunch program and the Mill Valley School District lunch program from January 7 through March 21. The PTA Lunch program is organized by Edna parent volunteers and is our second largest fundraiser for the school year. Hot lunch order forms were included in last week’s folders and are available in the school office. Both the PTA and MVSD order forms are due back to school by end of day Thursday, December 6.
IMPORTANT: The PTA lunch program is not able to accommodate any late orders. ALL LATE LUNCH REQUESTS WILL BE DIRECTED TO THE MVSD LUNCH PROGRAM. No exceptions will be made. Thank you.
The lunch menus/forms are posted on our website at http://www.ednamaguire.org/flyers-forms.html.
Science News from Camilla Barry:
"There's a bug in here!"
Kindergarteners took a walk behind Edna Maguire school last week to get a close-up view of oak trees and how they grow. Sadly, we discovered that many of the oak trees along the bike path are dying from Sudden Oak Death syndrome. Students were able to make the diagnosis themselves by searching for oozing red sap on the lower trunk of the trees.
Despite the disease, these trees are still producing acorns. Children examined these oak seeds by splitting some with a hammer. (Don't worry; this year there was a bumper crop of acorns, with hundreds on the trees and ground, so we left plenty for reproduction). Some of the seeds had travelers inside – the grub of the acorn weevil. Everyone was excited when we found one of the wiggly, chubby, white larvae. These larvae eat the nut meat before chewing a hole through the shell and burrowing into soil under the oak trees. We gently moved the grubs to the leaf litter after examining them.
Camilla Barry teaches science in the Edna Maguire kindergarten and first grade classes throughout the year.

All School Family Science/Laser Show Evening Event

Day time Assembly: American Pride, 1:30-2:30
A perfect blend of pop/rock music and patriotic songs, American Pride features uplifting songs, such as America the Beautiful (Ray Charles), Bless the USA (Lee Greenwood), and Fanfare to the Common Man (Aaron Copland). The program captures the ideals that make our nation great: liberty, diversity, and exploration of the unknown. Laser imagery includes famous national symbols and landmarks, such as the Lincoln Memorial, Mt. Rushmore, and the Statue of Liberty. Great any time of the year, but especially effective around Constitution Day (Sept 17), Veterans Day (Nov 11), Presidents Day (late Feb), Memorial Day (late May), Flag Day (June 14), and Independence Day (July 4).
Evening/Family Night: Winter Wonderland, 6:30-7:30
Brighten-up the dark, gray days of winter with a dazzling laser show. Enjoy a great blend of current pop music along with classic winter titles, such as Let it Snow, Jingle Bell Rock, and Sleigh Ride. The Winter Holiday Celebration is 100% nondenominational – i.e., there are no musical or visual references to Christmas (or Santa Claus), Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Ramadan, etc. Laser animations consist of surreal winter landscapes, winter sports, and the ever-popular misadventures of Squeaky the Penguin.
