Winter School Lunch Programs

This season, we will be offering both the PTA Lunch program and the Mill Valley School District lunch program from January 7th - March 21st. The PTA Lunch program is organized by Edna parent volunteers and is our second largest fundraiser for the school year. Hot lunch order forms will be included in the Tuesday, November 20th folders. Both the PTA and MVSD order forms are due back to school by end of day Thursday, December 6th.

IMPORTANT: The PTA lunch program is not able to accommodate any late orders. ALL LATE LUNCH REQUESTS WILL BE DIRECTED TO THE MVSD LUNCH PROGRAM. No exceptions will be made. Thank you.

Congratulations, Edna! A Note from Lisa Zimmer
Edna Maguire Elementary has been recognized this month by the California business community for high student academic achievement. Our school was selected by the California Business for Education Excellence Foundation and Just for the Kids-California as one of 569 public schools in California to receive the title of 2007 Honor Roll School. Schools receiving this distinction from California's business community have demonstrated consistent high student academic achievement.

This is Edna Maguire's third year to receive the Star Schools Award for academic excellence. I want to personally thank all the parents and teachers for their commitment to a strong home-school connection which is so important in our success. I am equally grateful to the teachers for their extraordinary talent in delivering an excellent academic program for our school.

Information on SF Bay Oil Spill from Wildcare
The disastrous oil spill in San Francisco Bay on November 7 has prompted many in our community to look for ways to help. One organization, WildCare, is assisting in the cleanup and care of wildlife affected by this accident.  For more information, click here.

Edna Spirit Day -
Tuesday, November 20 is Hat Day!
Sponsored by the Edna Maguire Student Council, Edna Spirit Days will encourage our students to show their school spirit. The first Spirit Day is HAT DAY! Students and teachers should wear their favorite hats to school. This can include anything from a favorite baseball cap to crazy hats.

For more information, contact Teacher Coordinator, Teresa Shern (tshern@mvschools.org).

WINTER WONDERLAND OF BOOKS
Book Fair: November 26 – November 30

Book Coffee Talk on Tuesday 11/27: We are excited to have the owner of Lafayette Bookstore, Dave Simpson, speaking at our Book Coffee Talk on Tuesday, November 27 at 9:00 am. He is a wonderful speaker and will be telling us his current adult favorites that will be available at the Book Fair. Also speaking will be Edna's librarian, Debra Wiley, to give us her favorite picks for kids for grade levels K-5. Invite all your Book Club friends! Get ready to buy some holiday presents!

Evening Event on Thursday 11/29: Come see Gennifer Cheldenko, author of Al Capone Does my Shirts; Penny Warner, The Nancy Drew Handbook; Jonathan Kathrein, Don't Fear the Shark; and our very own Deb Luster with her new book, I Am Happy Just the Way I Am. Hours are 5:00 to 8:00.

Book Drive During Book Fair
Edna Maguire School and Girl Scout Troop #31810 will be having a childre's book drive during the Edna Maguire Book Fair, Monday, November 26th through Friday November 30th.

Please have your child pick out and bring in to their classroom one of their "no-longer wanted" or outgrown books. These books will be donated to the San Francisco Children's Book Project and distributed to various children's facilities, including homeless shelters and daycare centers. Additional new of gently used books will be collected in the multi-purpose room during the Book Fair. If you have extra books that you are willing to part with, please bring them in.

Books are gifts that can be opened again and again. We hope everyone can participate and share the generosity of our Edna Maguire Community.

If you have questions, you can contact Aniko Molnar at armolnar@sbcglobal.net or Valerie Wynn at howval@comcast.net.

Prismatic Science/Laser Show – SAVE THE DATE!

1-5 Assembly
Thursday, Dec. 6 • 1:30pm – 2:30pm

All School Family Science/Laser Show Evening Event
Dec. 6 • 6:30pm – 7:30pm

Day time Assembly: American Pride, 1:30-2:30
A perfect blend of pop/rock music and patriotic songs, American Pride features uplifting songs, such as America the Beautiful (Ray Charles), Bless the USA (Lee Greenwood), and Fanfare to the Common Man (Aaron Copland). The program captures the ideals that make our nation great: liberty, diversity, and exploration of the unknown. Laser imagery includes famous national symbols and landmarks, such as the Lincoln Memorial, Mt. Rushmore, and the Statue of Liberty. Great any time of the year, but especially effective around Constitution Day (Sept 17), Veterans Day (Nov 11), Presidents Day (late Feb), Memorial Day (late May), Flag Day (June 14), and Independence Day (July 4).

Evening/Family Night: Winter Wonderland, 6:30-7:30
Brighten-up the dark, gray days of winter with a dazzling laser show. Enjoy a great blend of current pop music along with classic winter titles, such as Let it Snow, Jingle Bell Rock, and Sleigh Ride. The Winter Holiday Celebration is 100% nondenominational – i.e., there are no musical or visual references to Christmas (or Santa Claus), Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Ramadan, etc. Laser animations consist of surreal winter landscapes, winter sports, and the ever-popular misadventures of Squeaky the Penguin.

Edna Working Parents Network
Those parents who work away from home and are not able to get to school during the day are presented with many challenges. Some of us are single parents, some families have two parents who work, and not all of us have access to other family members who might help out.

The Edna Working Parents Network will provide a forum for working parents to exchange ideas and suggestions about how the needs of our families can be met. As members of the Edna Maguire community, it is important that working parents have a voice at the PTA meetings, even if we cannot be there in person, so that event arrangements can take into consideration the needs of our kids too.

If you are interested in becoming a part of this group, please email Sheila Brear at workprntpta@aol.com or call her at (415) 514-2066, (415) 341-3443, or (415) 381-6208.

Play Structure Donation THANKS
Our Play Structure Fundraising Drive is an ongoing success because of the generosity of so many Edna Maguire families, friends, and local businesses. Without these donations, the 2nd-5th grade Play Structure would not be a reality; and the KG/1st grade Play Structure would not be a possibility.

Our first campaign over the summer raised enough money to cover the costs of the 2nd – 5th grade Play Structure, in addition to an extra $20,000 that will be carried over to our KG/1st grade Play Structure. The Donation Day on November 14th raised $6,620!! Thanks to your incredible generosity, we are well on our way to raising the $60,000 needed to purchase and install the new equipment for our youngest students.
