Immediately following, librarian Lisa Monge will share her recommendations for new children's books. On Thursday, join us for the Evening Cafe from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., and enjoy dining with friends before going to the Book Fair. The Fair will remain open until 8:00 that evening. Authors Andrea Gosline (The Happiness Tree), Ben Boos (Swords), and Kathryn Otoshi (One) will be on hand to sign books.
Raffle tickets will be sold daily for a variety of prizes. The drawing will be held Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
You will also be able to order books online at the Book Fair Evening Event. Bring your address book and order for your family and friends for the holidays! You'll be able to designate the date of delivery, add a card, and even request gift wrapping. What could be easier?
All proceeds from our Book Fair benefit our school library.
Reminder: Book Drive This Week
Edna Maguire School and Girl Scout Troop #31810 are holding a
children's book drive during this week's Book Fair. Please have your child bring one outgrown or no-longer wanted book to class by Thursday, November 20th. Our goal is 100-percent participation!
You can bring additional new and gently used children's books to the multipurpose room during the Book Fair, where we'll have collection bins. These books will benefit the Children's Book Project and be distributed to homeless shelters and daycare centers, which have a great need for books. Remember, books are gifts that can be opened again and again!
Recycle Your Electronic Waste and
Support Edna too!
In conjunction with our "Mustangs Going Green" Book Fair, Edna is hosting an electronics waste recycling drive. On Saturday, November 22nd from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. you can bring your eWaste to the front of the school and it will be recycled in a responsible manner by C&T Recycling.
Items to recycle for free include: TVs, monitors, laptops, flat screens, cell phones, and ink jet cartridges. Items to recycle for a $5 fee include: CPUs, telephones, printers, copiers, DVD players, fax machines, VCRs , stereos, and video games. Please make checks out to Edna Maguire PTA.
The more eWaste we collect, the more money will be donated to Edna Maguire. If you have larger items or cannot make the event, other arrangements can be made. Please spread the word to your friends, neighbors, and businesses. This event is open to the entire community. Questions, please contact Katrina Kehl at kkehl@pacbell.net.
Garden Workday Success
At the garden workday last Saturday, our dedicated crew moved woodchips from our back pile to the dirt pathways to prepare the garden for the winter rains ahead, planted a bag of donated daffodil bulbs around the garden for a nice surprise in the spring, pulled the last of the summer squash from one of the raised beds and amended it for winter planting, and weeded the front area around the roses. Whole Foods sponsored the workday by donating bagels and cream cheese, scones, lots of yummy cookies, orange juice, and coffee. Thanks to Jill Anderson, Barbara Bleckman, the Bloom family, the Citroen family, the Dunne family, the Figuierinhas family, the Ross family and everyone else for a wonderful volunteer effort.
Did You Know?
Our very own Edna Maguire website is YOUR go-to for up-to-date information on ALL THINGS EDNA! A Google school calendar with important dates and events, class websites, the Pony Express and the latest school news, online hot lunch ordering, official flyers and forms, great photos, PTA agendas and minutes, and much, much more!
Did you know you that from our website you can directly link to helpful library information and homework help? Find out about our school's emergency plan. Check out the latest on our fabulous garden. Read helpful nutrition and wellness ideas. Link to the District website, Kiddo!, the special education PTA, and even the Community Center!
A special thank you to Linda Dunne, our amazing webmaster, Lauren Snell, our incredible Pony editor, Sandra Gunther, our calendar updater, and Jason Snell and Mike Bishop for their tireless efforts. Because of them, and our many other terrific volunteers and contributors, you'll never have to miss an Edna event or say "I didn't know about that!"
Thank You Lunch Ladies!
We have a wonderful group of PTA Hot Lunch Volunteers who give an hour or two each month to help keep our lunch partnership with Revolution Foods going! It is a lot of work, but approximately one-quarter of PTA funds are derived from this valuable program.
Lisa Church coordinates orders for each week and Kathy Sonderby and Katrina Kehl troubleshoot and attend meetings. Josie Viscardi does a beautiful job of coordinating all the volunteers. A special thanks to Margaret Krivoruchko, Tracy Ginther, Janet Fox, Kirsten Treais, Michelle Zimmermann, Shaila de Leede, Tina Taylor, Dominique Stevens, Dorothy O'Donnell, and Annie Peters, who apparently signed up for life and have given years of assistance.
New this year: Tina Zachariou, Colleen Madden, and what would we do without Ashia Yacoobali? Thank you also to Suzanne Diliberto and Nancy Bernstein for recently stepping up to the crates. We could not have gotten through September and October without Christine del Castillo and Margot Bishop. It is a busy hour to fill, but we appreciate all the hard work!
Our apologies if we missed anyone – this is a huge program.
Terrific Tuesday November 18th at Pizza Antica
Want a night off from cooking and doing the dishes? Meet your friends for a delicious dinner and support Edna Maguire.
On Tuesday, November 18th, Pizza Antica in Strawberry Village will donate 20 percent of your dining bill to our school. Just tell your waiter you are with our school and be sure to write Edna Maguire on your restaurant bill.
It's that simple! The more you eat, the more we make!
Make Cards for the Homeless
Warm Wishes is a local organization that supplies more than 5,000 pre-packed fanny packs (gloves, hats, socks, rain poncho) to help keep the homeless warm this winter. They would like to include holiday cards drawn and signed by students with each pack. We are hoping to contribute 500 cards to this project. Here is how your child can contribute:
- Make a card or cards with crayons or colored pencils only (NO markers, NO glitter, NO stickers)
- Sign the card "Warm Wishes! Love, Johnny" (must say "warm wishes" and the child's first name only)
Please place your child's cards in the Warm Wishes envelope in the office by Monday, December 1st.
