Candy Drive
Guess how much candy was donated to Edna's Candy Drive for Soldiers… 240 pounds!!! View pictures of all the candy donated and the piles of boxes needed to send all this candy to Iraq.

A big thank you to all of the Edna students who donated their Halloween candy. It was sent to the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment stationed in northern Iraq, near the city of Mosul. These soldiers are on their third yearlong deployment and are focusing on building schools and hiring teachers. Your chocolate bars and lollipops will certainly brighten the day for these brave soldiers and Iraqi children.

NEXT WEEK! Edna Maguire Book Fair
The Edna Maguire Book Fair, “Mustangs Going Green," is next week: Monday, November 17th through Thursday, November 20th. Sponsored by Lafayette Book Store, the book fair is open from 8:15 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. DAILY in the multipurpose room (Monday's Book Fair opens at 8:30 a.m.).

On Tuesday, November 18th at 8:45 a.m., join us for breakfast treats and Dave's Book Chat (Lafayette Book Store owner discusses his picks), followed by Librarian Lisa Monge recommending new children's books.

On Thursday, November 20th, come to the Book Fair Evening Café (5:00 to 7:00 p.m.) and Book Fair (5:00 to 8:00 p.m.), featuring authors Andrea Gosline, Ben Boos, and Kathryn Otoshi.

Online ordering is available. Come order books for family and friends outside of our area to be shipped in time for the holidays!

**All proceeds benefit the Edna Maguire Library**

Book Fair Evening Café
Thursday November 20th
The Book Fair Evening Café will be on Thursday, November 20th. Come in between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. for an inexpensive and yummy dinner so you can do some holiday or other shopping without the hassle of planning or making dinner. We'll be serving grilled chicken, all-beef hotdogs, baked potatoes with fixings, Caesar salad, garlic bread, and dessert (here's the menu).

We need volunteers to make this work! The PTA buys the majority of food and fixings, but we need donations. A flyer went home in last week's Wednesday folder with a list of needed items. Please take a look at the list and see what you can contribute to this fun evening. Questions, contact Christine del Castillo at christine@spendlocally.com or 516-0360.

Book Drive
Edna Maguire School and Girl Scout Troop #31810 are holding a children's book drive during next week's Book Fair. Please have your child bring one outgrown or no-longer wanted book to class between Monday and Thursday, November 17th through 20th. Our goal is 100-percent participation!

You can bring additional new and gently used children's books to the multipurpose room during the Book Fair, where we'll have collection bins. These books will benefit the Children's Book Project and be distributed to homeless shelters and daycare centers, which have a great need for books. Remember, books are gifts that can be opened again and again!

Class Web Pages and Staff Phone Numbers
Check out the fantastic new class web pages! Each class has its own web page that will be updated throughout the year.

With the new phone system at school, a number of teachers now have new extensions. A complete list of staff phone numbers is available on the Staff Information page of the Edna Maguire website.

The Golden Sneaker Award
A Safe Routes to School Program
The Golden Sneaker Award contest is in full swing for the month of November at Edna Maguire. This competition rewards the class with the greatest number of students who walk, bike, or carpool to school in a given month. Each class keeps track of how often its students commute by these methods, and the class with the most participation overall (regardless of the mode breakdown) wins the Golden Sneaker Award to display throughout the month. The contest fosters teamwork and inspires students to get ready in time to walk, bike, or carpool to school. The winners will be announced at a Lifeskills Assembly in December. Watch for the Mill Valley School District Directory to find carpool companions. If there are no families close by, driving to a rendezvous point in your neighborhood to carpool or walk/bike together does count.

Please contact Rhonda Campbell at rhonda@kcfilm.net if you have any questions.

Farmer’s Market
On October 30th, we held a Farmer's Market to sell pumpkins, rose sachets, garden bags, and winter greens. Thanks to everyone's generous support, the garden raised $122. Thank you Steph Ryder, Jill Anderson, Jody Branham, and Lisa Santos for your volunteer efforts. To purchase an organic cotton tote bag sporting the “Proud Sponsor of the Mill Valley Children's Garden," please contact Saor Stetler at sstetler@earthlink.net. The bags are $10 each or two for $15.

Shop Local to Support Sloat and
Your Children’s Garden
Attention all Mill Valley Children's Garden supporters: Sloat Garden Center is sponsoring “Growing Up Green Week" through Sunday, November 16th. Bring in our Edna flyer and Sloat will donate a percentage of your purchases to the Children's Garden. The higher our participation, the greater the benefit we will receive. If you are thinking about fall plantings (it's a good time to plant trees now that the rain is beginning) or purchasing some garden tools or furniture, shop at Sloat now with your Edna Flyer. Thanks for supporting the garden.

Make Cards for the Homeless
Warm Wishes is a local organization that supplies more than 5,000 pre-packed fanny packs (gloves, hats, socks, rain poncho) to help keep the homeless warm this winter. They would like to include holiday cards drawn and signed by students with each pack. We are hoping to contribute 500 cards to this project. Here is how your child can contribute:

  • Make a card or cards with crayons or colored pencils only (NO markers, NO glitter, NO stickers)
  • Sign the card "Warm Wishes! Love, Johnny" (must say "warm wishes" and the child's first name only)
Please bring your child's cards to the office for collection by Monday, December 1st. There will be an envelope marked “Warm Wishes" in the office for card collections. Any questions, contact Mari Allen at allenmari@hotmail.com or Erin Griffis at erin.griffis@sbcglobal.net.

Lousy News in Marin
Thank you to the wonderful parents who were such a help at the school lice check in September! Yes, there were more than a handful of kids at Edna with lice this fall… more than two handfuls, in fact. Lice do not discriminate by income or cleanliness and they are in our community. Educate yourselves about lice and check your family from time to time. There are two local salons whom will check your child – Bug-a-Lugs in Mill Valley and Nitpixies in San Rafael – for those of you too queasy to check or who have difficulty getting rid of nits. There will be another lice check this spring, but it will be up to all of us to lessen the lice outbreaks. We apologize if we made anyone feel itchy!

PTA Special Association Meeting
November 20 at 7:00 p.m.
On Thursday, November 20th at 7:00 p.m., the PTA will hold a Special Association Meeting in the multipurpose room to coincide with the end of the Book Fair Café. The purpose of the special meeting is to vote on the proposed carry-over of $1,037 from last year's PTA General Fund to the Edna Maguire Library for the purchase of materials such as books, cassette players, and books on tape. If you have any questions about this vote, please contact Katrina Kehl at kkehl@pacbell.net.

KIDDO! NEWS

Kiddo! Spring Gala – March 14, 2009
Mark your calendars for the Kiddo! Spring Gala on March 14th at the Mill Valley Community Center. This is one of the best events in town, so please join us in the fun. We are still enlisting volunteers for auction solicitation, decorations, set up and clean up. We are also in dire need of a catalog editor. Anyone interested can contact Molly Williams or Amy Curtis at mollywilliams@comcast.net or amy.curtis@comcast.net. Thank you!

The Auction Committee is busy gathering wonderful items for the Auction, but we need the help of the entire parent community. Can you help with any of the following?

Wine collectors! Consider donating a wine vertical, a big bottle or a specially engraved bottle to the Kiddo! Auction.

Food Lovers! We’re looking for families with connections to restaurants or chefs who can help us put together dining gift certificates, a private dining experience for a group of people with a (known) chef, a cooking class for a group, or any other fun food experience.

Travelers! Have some miles to use up, or maybe an available vacation home or timeshare, or a hotel contact?

Sports Fans! Do you or your friends have access to sporting event tickets, luxury boxes, or sports memorabilia? Connections! Do you know someone in the movie industry, TV or radio? People love to bid on the behind the scenes tours or autographed items.

If you or anyone you know can help us with these items, please submit the auction donor form, or contact one of our Silent Auction chairs: Kelly Reade (383-8886 ksreade@comcast.net) or Ahtossa Fullerton (380-1803 ahtossa@hotmail.com).
