The Garden Fair is This Sunday!
The Garden Fair is here! Please join us this Sunday, May 31st from noon to 4:00 p.m. for music, food, games, activities and prizes! There will be plenty of fun things for kids of all ages. Visit the petting zoo, make crafts, run races, and watch celebrity chefs judge the bake off. Come celebrate the Garden and have a great time. Download the flyer for a complete schedule of activities.

Your PTA Dollars at Work
Each year the PTA works tirelessly to raise funds through Steeplechase, the hot lunch program, the book fair, and a few other events. All the money raised goes directly to programs across all grade levels at Edna. Please take a look at some of the programs, equipment, and supplies your generous donations funded this year. Thank you to the Edna Maguire community for continuing to make our school such a magical place!

Variety Show Kudos!
The 5th Annual Edna Maguire Variety Show was KIDazzling! See pictures of all the fantastic acts and read some parent comments. They are wonderful testimonials! Enthusiastic thanks go to our parent volunteers, especially:

  • Jody Branham, director, producer, and set designer who put in months of effort to organizing the show and working with our talented kids
  • Rob Thomure, our expert sound and light person, for handling all of the kids' music CDs and providing guitar accompaniment
  • Max Perkoff, for his musical support and skillful backstage management
  • Deb Luster, our front stage manager and organizer of parent show assistants
  • Kathy Sonderby, for assisting at rehearsals, organizing the show line-up, helping backstage at the show, and organizing the flower sales
  • Eric Zener, for working special effects back stage
  • Janet Fox and Erin Salcuni, for organizing the concession stand, and their team of parent helpers: Kerstin Bastian, Francoise Chouchena, Jessica Ryan, Katrina Kehl, Ruben Garcia, Nancy Bernstein, Christina Taylor, Dena Davis, Cordelia Walsh, and Barb Gerraty
  • Neysa Furey-Peters, for videotaping the show and editing the DVD
  • Lisa Gilmore and Atlanta Heidhuis, for taking gorgeous photos of the acts
  • Dan Kelly, for helping prepare the stage and lights
  • Lisa Zimmer and Katrina Kehl, for their ongoing enthusiastic support
  • Happy Feet Dance School, for loaning us costumes
  • Sharon Boucher, for coming to teach the kids the "Razzle Dazzle" song.

A big round of applause to all of the parents who participated; this was absolutely essential to the success of the show!

An especially warm thank you to the amazing Edna Maguire students who performed, announced, were stagehands, and show hosts! And finally, thank you to the Edna families who supported the show. We're so glad you enjoyed it!

Library Books are Due This Friday
Please make sure your children return all library books by this Friday, May 29th. Fifth graders should have already turned in their books. The last library class will be on Friday, June 5th. Watch for final overdue book notices in the June 10th Wednesday Folders. Thank you for your help in making sure all books are returned on time.

The Bake Off at the Garden Fair
Bring your delicious dessert to the Garden Fair to compete before culinary experts and area celebrity chefs. The judges will assign points for presentation, taste, and composition before awarding some truly fantastic prizes. Bring an organic fruit dessert and $25 entry fee to the fair by 11:30 a.m. this Sunday, May 31st and we'll take care of the rest. Bring in your written recipe to be included in an Edna Maguire dessert cookbook! Download the flyer with the list of fabulous prizes. Good luck!

Volunteers Still Needed for the Garden Fair
Thank you to all the parent volunteers who have signed up to work the Garden Fair. We can't do it without YOU! We still need volunteers for the 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. and 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. shifts. Please email Barbara Bleckman at barbaracrampton@comcast.net to sign up for this fun event!

Yearbook Thanks
The yearbook is coming soon. Kudos to all the volunteers who made this treasure trove of memories possible. Many thanks to Justine Whitehead for her creative design and countless photos, Kathy Bishop for managing the business end of yearbook production, Leslie Fielder for helping it all go smoothly, and all the Room Parents in each grade who supplied photos throughout the school year. Special thanks to Jackie Lalanne, Amy Faulkner and Katie Mosert, our beloved art teachers, for organizing the children's artwork. Finally, thank you Jackson Butler for orchestrating production and bringing us an amazing year of images in the Edna Maguire yearbook.

Last Chance: Reimbursements for Receipts
Thanks to Edna teachers and parents who have bought supplies for various events during the 2008-09 school year. If you wish to be reimbursed for your purchases, please turn in your receipts with a completed reimbursement form to the PTA Treasurer's (Suzanne Alpert) mail box in the Edna Office. Reimbursement forms can be found on our website. All receipts must be turned in by June 1st to qualify for payment. Finally, many thanks for all of the errand-running, shopping, and helping you have done to make this such a successful school year.

KIDDO!

Kiddo! Kicks Off 2009 Annual Giving Campaign
Thank you to everyone who participated in Donation Day and to all the school families who have already made their 2009 Kiddo! contribution! We have made a good start to raising the $1.9 million needed to save library and classroom aides from budget cuts, as well as fund our award-winning art, music, drama, dance and poetry programs for the 2009-10 school year.

For the school families who have not yet donated, please note that follow-up phone calls are on the way – donating now will help Kiddo! save time and money so more funding can go to the kids. Thanks in advance for your generous support in these difficult financial times for our schools. Don't forget to: DROP your donation in the Kiddo! box at your school, CLICK on www.kiddo.org and make your donation online, or MAIL your donation to Kiddo! at 409 Sycamore Ave.

A Giant Thank You!
Thank you to the more than 800 Mill Valley families who came out to watch the MVMS 8th Grade Chorus sing the National Anthem and support Kiddo! at the Giants game on Sunday, May 17th. We raised more than $6,000 for next year's programs and services! Go Team!

Special Kiddo! Music Programs for Grades 3, 4, 5
Thanks to your generous donations to Kiddo!, there are special musical opportunities for students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade, which are offered in addition to regularly scheduled Kiddo! music classes. Note schedule change: beginning next year, 5th grade band will meet at MVMS twice a week: one rehearsal before school (7:30 - 8:15 a.m.) and one after school on Wednesdays (2:15 - 3:00 p.m.). Look for sign-up sheets in September.

New MVMS Band Programs
Band students at Mill Valley Middle School have some exciting new musical opportunities beginning in the 2009-10 school year. Band Director Cayce Carnahan will offer several new programs and has revamped the existing band curriculum to include more musical diversity and opportunity for advancement. As always, it is thanks to your generous donations to Kiddo! that our students receive a well-rounded education rich in the arts. Please contact Cayce Carnahan at ccarnahan@mvschools.org with any specific questions.
