SCHOOL NEWS

Staffing for the 2008-09 School Year
We are all set to go for the next school year! We will be saying goodbye to several teachers, and welcoming several new teachers to our Edna family. In addition, some teachers will be moving to different classrooms within our school, or returning to Edna in the fall with new names or new additions to their families!

A fond farewell...

Susan Johnson (third grade) and Christy Herrmann (kindergarten) will be retiring at the end of this year. We thank them for their many years of service and dedication to our school and the children.

Darlene Reap-Klosty (third grade) will be moving to Chapel Hill, North Carolina with her family. We wish her well as she begins a new chapter in her life.

Ashlie Harr (fifth grade) will be leaving us at the end of this year to relocate to Irvine, California with her husband who is taking a new job. Best wishes!

Exciting Additions and Changes…..

Jennifer Johnston will be moving to the kindergarten position, leaving the English Language Learner teaching position that she has held at Edna Maguire for the past four years. Jennifer says: I am both honored and thrilled to have the opportunity to transition to teaching kindergarten at Edna Maguire beginning this fall. Though I have enjoyed every one of my teaching experiences over the past seven years, including all grade levels K - 12 as an ELL teacher and fifth grade classroom teacher, it has long been my dream to teach kindergarten. There is something about being able to witness and foster the children's introduction to the school experience and their transition into childhood that has always captivated me. It is such an important time of growth and exciting new challenges, and I am so looking forward to being a part of it all. As a returning member of the Edna community of teachers, and after four years as the ELL teacher on this campus, I know that I will be well supported by a fantastic team of kindergarten teachers. I am so fortunate to be working in the Mill Valley School District, with its unparalleled spirit of excellence, growth, parental support and amazing students. See you in the fall!

Mariam Ojeda will take Jennifer's position as our new English Language Learner teacher. Mariam says: I'm a native California girl, born and raised in Southern California. My interest in a teaching career came while I was a student at Wellesley College, when I was placed as a teacher's assistant in a tri-lingual program (French, English, and Spanish.) I earned my teaching credentials at Claremont Graduate University and my administrative credential at San Jose State. While teaching at California State University Northridge, I attended UCLA's Administration and Policy Studies in Education program to deepen my understanding of the legal foundations of our education system. Later, while teaching in South Central Los Angeles, I quenched my long-term interest in psychology by earning a second Masters degree in Marriage, Child and Family Counseling. I have worked as an ELL instructor in Malibu and I have served as a volunteer counselor for a local charity. I look forward to working in the Mill Valley School District.

Jennifer Foskett, who currently team-teaches second grade with Judith Barry, will be taking a leave of absence to care for her two daughters next year. Judith Barry will be taking a third grade position and will be with us full time next year. Carrie Morgan (currently second grade) will also be moving to third grade. Anna Isler and Colleen Carr will fill the two second grade positions.

Anna Isler says: I was born and raised in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, and moved to the Bay Area when I was 21. I received my BA in Child and Adolescent Development from San Francisco State University, and my Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from Dominican University, where I am now working on my Master's in Education. I have been a preschool and pre-K teacher for the past nine years, and hope to apply my strong knowledge of child development into my classroom practice. I am also interested in bringing environmental education and project-based learning into the classroom. In my free time, I love cooking, crafts, gardening, reading, camping, going out to see live music, and traveling.

Colleen Carr says: I am a California native who spent most of my life in the Bay Area. I earned my undergraduate degree from UC Santa Barbara and my Graduate Certification from Sierra Nevada College in Lake Tahoe. I began my teaching career seven years ago and have taught second, third, and fourth grades. I left Mill Valley three years ago when my husband's company relocated us to Austin, Texas. During my time in Austin I was selected Teacher of the Year. I am now returning to Marin and thrilled to be joining the Edna team! I love learning and constantly seek new opportunities to grow and evolve as a professional. In addition, I love to hike and bike on Mt. Tam with my dog, Jake, and take many trips up to Tahoe to ski and play.

Kimba Lackey (currently fourth grade) will move to teaching third grade. Replacing Kimba in fourth grade is Kate Sprague. Kate says: I grew up in Southwestern Washington on a farm with my parents and two younger brothers. I attended the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington, where I majored in mathematics. After graduation I moved to Chicago to pursue a degree in education at Northwestern University. In 2006 I graduated from Northwestern with my Master of Science in Education. I've been teaching fifth grade in a suburb of Chicago for two years. My husband, Doug and I are both thrilled to be moving to the West Coast! I'm very excited to be joining the Edna Maguire community.

Aubrey Bowen will be coming back from a year's leave of traveling the world to take her “old” job back as fifth grade teacher. Aubrey will be team teaching with Teresa Shern (fifth grade) again.

And congratulations to the BUSY first grade teachers….

Julie Hoffman is now Mrs. Julie Bremer! Jenny Rees will become Mrs. Jenny Leogrande in July, and Nandita Morey will become Mrs. Nandita Stachon in August when she marries fourth grade teacher, Michael Stachon! Lastly, Shana Stewart and her husband, Cameron, welcomed baby Braden Stewart this May!

Muffins for Moms Thank You!
Thank you to Rob Luster who coordinated the effort and the volunteers that welcomed our fabulous moms for our annual event, Muffins for Mom. We had a wonderful turnout, with lots of moms and grandmothers! Thank you to Wade Van Valen, Pete Gilmore, Howard Wynn, Mike Fox, Ed Faubel, Ryan Ferguson, Kent Lindsay, Paul Chapman, and Jose del Castillo for serving the lovely moms their muffins and coffee. We appreciate you!

Garden Summer Watering Volunteers are Needed!
The Edna Children's Garden is looking for approximately 20 families to help water planted areas that are not irrigated. Fortunately, most of the garden is on automatic drip irrigation so this would involve watering only the fruit trees and areas on the periphery of the garden.

While watering, you can bring a picnic, some books to read with your child on the butterfly bench or in the ‘beyond words' reading bench area. Pick and eat what is available. Use it in the morning, afternoon or evening. Watch the butterflies, observe the hummingbirds, and visit our worm bins. Whatever you wish – we need you!

If you're interested, please contact Stirling Somers at ssomers@sveforum.org or call 381-4144.

Wear a Pair, Share a Pair!
Give back your worn-out pair of Crocs™ shoes, and they will be ground up and made into new shoes to be donated to people in need around the world. To many of us, shoes are a basic necessity; to many others, shoes are a privilege. Crocs™ has partnered with Soles United for this first-of-a-kind recycled footwear program, and Edna can make a huge difference. So when the tread becomes worn and they've reached their end-of-life, take the next step and drop them in the recycling bin located in the front office between now and Monday, June 13th. (NO knock-off brands, please, as they are not made out of the same recyclable material as Crocs™).

Get Ready Marin at Edna Maguire REMINDER!
Just a reminder to all those who signed up. The program will take place this Thursday, May 29th at 8:40 a.m. in the MPR. If you would still like to attend, but haven't yet RSVP'd, please do so.
