Principally Speaking

Dear Family,

Last week was amazing for me as everyone celebrated "Administrator's Week." I enjoyed the lovely breakfasts and lunches and all the kind words and wishes from students, staff and families. I never take this wonderful school for granted, and I appreciate every day that I serve you as principal of Edna Maguire. I am not sure how many people have actually had an ode written in their honor, but I will forever treasure it!

I would like to announce that Shana Stewart has received our 2009/10 Golden Bell honor for excellence in teaching. Each year our staff nominates a teacher who represents a first among equals, honoring the teaching profession as a whole. Shana will be recognized at a countywide ceremony in April and at the "Celebration of Service" event at the Redwoods on April 30th. She will receive the Elizabeth Terwilliger award that recognizes the wonderful work being done by all teachers and promotes respect for the teaching profession.

In addition, the Elizabeth Terwilliger award for Student Community Service will go to fifth grader Madison Zimmerman. Madison has held numerous bake sales in her neighborhood and at sporting events to raise money for our school garden. We also want to recognize her ongoing efforts to raise awareness for Heifer International, which provides animals, training, and business development to impoverished communities around the globe. Way to go Madison!

Friday, March 5th marked the celebration of Read Across America in honor of Dr. Seuss's birthday. Guest readers from all walks of life came to our school to read stories with each of our classes, and a birthday celebration with bubbles and apples delighted our students. Thank you to event coordinators Barbara Bleckman and Stacey Ciauri for such a wonderful event.

Lisa Zimmer, Principal

Travel Green March 15th through April 9th
All classes will be participating in a four-week long Go For The Green challenge from March 15th to April 9th. This challenge, facilitated by Safe Routes to Schools, encourages Marin County families to travel together to school by walking, biking, or carpooling.

Each morning, teachers will track the number of students that travel to school "green." Safe Routes will award $100 to the class at our school with the most green trips. You can find others to "go green" with by registering at www.schoolpoolmarin.org.

Thank you for your support in making an effort to travel green beginning March 15th!

Walk and Wheel Wednesday - March 17, 2010
Let's increase our green trips and increase our chances of winning $2000 for Edna Maguire. We are kicking off the first week of the Green Ways to School Challenge with a BIG Walk and Wheel to School day on Wednesday, March 17, 2010.

Join the walking/wheeling "school bus" at the Mill Valley Community Center at 8 am in the parking lot (closest to the bike path). You can drop your child at the community center or walk with the "school bus." We ask parents with kindergarten and/or first grade students to ensure that you, another parent or an older sibling accompanies them.

Lisa Zimmer will lead the group to Edna Maguire where a welcome table awaits with green edible goodies. Feel free to wear green!

Your Chance to Join the PTA Executive Board! VP Site Enhancement
The Edna PTA is looking for a volunteer to fill the role of VP Site Enhancement for the 2010/11 school year. This is a great opportunity to make a visible contribution to our school and play an important role in the PTA. This is primarily a coordination role, so no "site enhancement" experience is necessary – just enthusiasm, organizational skills and attention to deadlines and detail. You'll attend monthly board meetings and oversee and check in with various committee chairs. This is a fun, sociable position with opportunity to meet parents across all grade levels. Please contact Jo Southern, joinsf65jp@aol.com for more information.

Donuts with Dad on March 26th
Calling all dads and donut connoisseurs! Grab your dad and join us for some very sweet and tasty connection time. How often do you get to sample sticky and delicious confections while sharing quality time with dear ol' dad before the busy day unfolds?

On Friday, March 26th, from 7:45 to 8:30 a.m. in the multipurpose room, we'll have coffee, juice, assorted fruits, and of course donuts! You don't want to miss this popular event.

Lice Check on March 26th
The next school-wide lice check is scheduled for Friday, March 26th. Kindergarten will begin at 1:00 and grades 1 through 5 will begin at 2:00. Each classroom needs two volunteers. Please check with your room parents and get your name on the list to help out!

Three Lunch Volunteers Needed
In order to keep our lunch program going strong, we need a few volunteers every other week from 11:15 until 12:15 to help pass out lunches. Two Monday shifts are open starting March 14th, and one Friday shift starting March 12th or 26th. Training is available. For more information, contact Josie Viscardi, jv64@sbcglobal.net, Edna lunch volunteer Coordinator. Thanks!

Sweet Success!
The totals are in for the See's Candies Valentine's Day Fundraiser and it was another "sweet" success. Thanks to everyone who bought, sold, or shared candy with a friend – you helped Edna earn $1700! In first place, and winner of the "Singing Hound Dog" was Maggie del Castillo in Room 7, whose sales totaled more than $400! Close behind and in second place was June Bernstein in Room 4, and third place went to Christopher Wilmoth in Room 2. Ms. Eshoff's Room 7 won the Top Sales Classroom honor, including a stuffed animal prize for everyone. Thanks to all participating students for your support!

Thank You Art Teachers and Art Show Volunteers
Thanks to the following wonderful Art Show volunteers for putting together a great interactive show: Jaime Passot, Jeanne Johnson, Amy Sherman, Michelle Zimmermann, Shaila Deleede, Judy Safavi, Courtney Wimmer, Claudia Von Welczeck, Suzanne Di Bianca , Christine Del Castillo, Leslie Myers, Rebecca Heitz, Maddie Trainer, and Paula and Margaret. If you volunteered and we missed your name, we apologize and sincerely thank you too.

We also send our greatest appreciation to Kiddo! and our fantastic art teachers, without whom this would not be possible. Jackie, Amy and Katie you're the best!
