Food Donations to St. Vincent's
The Hot Lunch program is generating a lot of food waste. Extra milk, orange juice, fruit, and bags of carrots are collected every day in the multipurpose room. We fill up to three milk crates every three days with unopened items. Due to the California State Nutritional Guidelines, the full meal option cannot be changed to offer less food, but there is a way that our unwanted food can be donated to help others in need.
The kitchen at St. Vincent's (a shelter in San Rafael) is happy to accept these items for the hundreds of people they serve. We are looking for volunteers to drive the food up to St. Vincent's on one or two days per week. The kitchen is open seven days a week and accepts donations from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. This is a volunteer effort with lots of flexibility that can benefit so many. If you are interested in helping, contact Katrina Kehl for more details at kkehl@pacbell.net.
Kindergarten Science with Camilla
This month the kindergarteners made ice cream in a ziplock bag. This was a lesson in heat exchange between liquids and solids. They used ice to move heat away from cream and sugar, and presto! Ice cream! The students could easily see the results of the heat exchange by examining the ice (it had liquefied from the heat) and cream (it had solidified when heat was removed). Everyone agreed this was a very tasty lesson. Ask your children how they made it; this experiment is easy to do at home.
