February is jump rope month in P.E.! This Wednesday, February 24th, Edna Maguire students will jump rope for the American Heart Association. We hope each child will donate $1 toward lifesaving heart and stroke research and educational programs. There is no pressure to donate; either way, your child will have fun jumping rope! Put your dollars in the "Happy Heart" box in the front office or give them to your child's teacher. Thank you Schuyler Harvey for organizing this event!

Green Ways to School Challenge
Carpool, walk, or bike to school and help us all win big! Register at www.SchoolPoolMarin.org.

We are pleased to participate in the new Green Ways to School Campaign from Marin Community Foundation and Safe Routes to Schools. The program focuses on reducing car trips to and from schools to lower related greenhouse gases and traffic congestion in our community. A new web-based SchoolPool trip-matching program will help you find other families with whom to carpool.

There are incentives for families to participate and cash awards of $500 to $2000 for the Marin County schools with the largest increase in Green Trips. Please register to support Edna Maguire in this contest – there’s no cost or obligation. It only takes a minute at www.SchoolPoolMarin.org.

COMMUNITY CONNECTION

Miracle of Reading Speaker Event
Marin Primary & Middle School has the honor of hosting Dr. Maryanne Wolf, preeminent professor of child development and Director of the Center for Reading and Language Research at Tufts University.

This Thursday, February 25th at 7:00 p.m., Dr. Wolf will present "The Reading Brain in the Digital Age: The Miracle of Reading and How Reading Changes Your Child’s Brain." She will discuss:

  • How children need both time to think and the motivation to think for themselves.
  • How the brain ever learned to read
  • How to promote an enduring love for books
  • How reading books changes the way we think
  • How the digital age impacts the development of "deep reading" in our children
  • How to support children who struggle to learn to read

Dr. Wolf gives an impassioned case for reading to children in this excellent video. She also addresses the development of a child's reading brain in this article in the Boston Globe

Dr. Wolf is the author of critically-acclaimed book Proust and the Squid: The Story and the Science of the Reading Brain, which has been translated into 11 languages and an audio version. We look forward to seeing you on Thursday, February 25 at 7:00 p.m. in the Marin Primary & Middle School Multipurpose Room, 20 Magnolia Avenue in Larkspur.
