Family Math Night This Thursday
Come to the multipurpose room on Thursday, January 22nd from 5:30 to 7:15 p.m. to participate in one of Lawrence Hall of Science's most popular programs, Build It! Participants exercise their design, problem-solving, and spatial skills by constructing in two and three dimensions. Our Edna Maguire students will bring the creativity! This event is for all grade levels and their families.

We still need 11 more parent volunteers! If you are interested in overseeing a table activity, please email Lisa Zimmer at lzimmer@mvschools.org. All volunteers will need to be in the multipurpose room at 5:00 p.m. for set-up – children are welcome!

See's Candies Valentine's Day Fundraiser Starts Today
This annual fundraiser raises money for Sutter's Fort, Walker Creek, and other PTA programs. Valentine's Day is only weeks away, so help your family, friends and neighbors save a trip to See's Candy by bringing See's Candy to them. Edna Maguire receives 50 percent of each box of chocolates sold. Look for the flyer and order form in your child's backpack and return it to your child's teacher or the office by January 30th. Chocolates will be delivered to the classroom the following week.

Dr. Seuss Reading Cafe
Edna Maguire's Dr. Seuss Reading Cafe will be open from March 3rd through 6th. Each class will visit the cafe once, then participate in a Dr. Seuss trivia competition at the end of the week. This event is primarily run by students, and parents are not expected to attend. However, we need a few parent volunteers to help with cafe decorations (Monday afternoon) and a few more to assist the fourth- and fifth-grade waiters (two- to three-hour shifts during the day). If you can help, please contact Janie Karp at jkarpj@comcast.net.

Garden Workday Kudos
Last weekend's garden workday was a big success. Whole Foods sponsored the event (again) by providing coffee, juice, bagels, pastries, cookies and other goodies. They even brought along a team of volunteers to help out! Thank you Susan, Adam, Carl, Rick, and Skip from Whole Foods. Jill Anderson, Linda Dunne, Lori Fineman, Katrina Kehl, Kathy Sonderby, and many helpful Edna students hung painted signs, installed a hose caddy, planted bulbs, weeded, hung bird feeders and bird houses, replenished gravel on the tool shed floor, constructed a new worm bin out of an old planter box, prepared the berry area for planting, and pruned the fruit trees. Thanks to everyone for coming out and moving the garden forward.

Winter Holiday Sing Pictures
On December 19th, the multipurpose room was standing room only as students, many dressed for Pajama Day, gathered with their teachers and families for the annual Edna Maguire Winter Holiday Sing. The singing was led by our incomparable Kiddo!-funded music teacher, Nora Thomas and the soaring, crystal-clear voices of the Edna children, including the kindergarten reindeer chorus! The children sang traditional holiday songs, Jewish folk songs, and songs of winter to welcome the holiday season. Click here to see some terrific pictures of the event.

Book Drive – Big Success in Time of Great Need
Thank you to all the Edna families that so generously contributed books to the fall Book Drive, hosted by Girl Scout Troop 31810. Almost all of the 968 books have been distributed to hundreds of children via the Children's Book Project in San Francisco. Thank you for contributing to such a great cause!

Interactive Art Show
On February 6th through 12th, Edna Maguire will host the Interactive Art Show in the multipurpose room. See the complete schedule for individual classroom activities. The show culminates on the evening of Tuesday, February 10th, when all projects will be on display for everyone to see and enjoy. Please note that there will be a PTA Executive Board and Association Meeting in the teachers' lounge at 6:00 p.m. All are welcome to attend. The Art Show reception begins at 6:30 p.m.

MVSD Board Thanks Edna PTA
At its January 14th meeting, the Mill Valley School District Board of Trustees recognized and honored the Edna Maguire PTA for "its significant contributions to the educational programs of our schools and its generous support to fill the 2008-09 funding gap." PTA President Katrina Kehl was present to accept a certificate of appreciation which is now on display in
the front office. We couldn't do it, of course, without the wonderful PTA members, parent volunteers and contributors who work so tirelessly to raise the funds which help make an Edna education so outstanding. The Board, on behalf of our children, sincerely thanks you!.

Psychologically Speaking
Help your kids learn to take risks, in school and in life. District
psychologist Claudia Trinklein-Engman talks about the importance of risk-taking and strategies for encouraging your kids to step out of their comfort zones.
