We are the Green Team: a combination of third, fourth, and fifth graders who have been working hard to keep Edna Maguire clean and help the earth. Our goals are to have every Edna Maguire student to know how to recycle, compost, make less trash, and to understand why these things are important.
Green team members go to either the first grade or second - fifth grade area and collect recycling and compost after students finish eating lunch. In the recycling bin we put paper, foil, plastic, glass, milk cartons, and juice pouches. In the compost bin we take fruit, vegetables, and other leftovers. We take the compost to the garden and the recycling to the big school bins.
Did you know that if you pack a juice pouch, like a Capri Sun, in your lunch you can bring it to the Green Team? When the green team has 100 juice pouches, they will send them to a company that will plant a tree in the rain forest.
Here's an inside tour of a waste-free lunch: containers, reusable utensils, drinks in reusable bottles, and Capri Sun drinks. They shouldn't have plastic bags, plastic utensils, or other containers that you throw away. We are looking into selling reusable containers for kids to use in their lunch. We will keep you posted about what's happening with the Green Team.
