Though it was fairly spontaneous and last minute, our first Edna
Garden to Market Table event of the year was a great success. Mari and
her son, Thomas, joined me in the garden for a bountiful harvest of various
summer and winter squash (some of gargantuan proportions), tomatoes, herbs and
flowers. Stirling Somers and Lisa Santos worked the tables at both
pick-up spots and, thanks to the generosity of our Edna community, made $117;
better than our best day at the MV Farmer's Market with less volunteer time
involved.
As a result, I think we will be dropping out of the MV Farmer's
Market until next summer and continue the market table at Edna every
Thursday. We will work on involving the students as much as possible,
hopefully getting classes assigned to harvest every week and getting some
students to work the tables with a parent volunteer supervising.
Our first impromptu FOG (Friends of the Garden) meeting will be
held next Thursday, September 4, 2008 at 8 am with staff and any interested parents that can make it and after drop off
with any interested parents who cannot make the 8 am meeting to flesh out this and other garden ideas for the
year. Thanks to everyone.

Located in Mill Valley, California, at Edna Maguire Public Elementary School, the Mill Valley Children's Garden is a 1/3 acre outdoor classroom laboratory. The garden is a hands-on treasure for both curriculum-based teaching and exploratory creative experimentation - it is a "textbook come to life." Through the Children's Garden, children learn botany, ecology, math, science, language arts, creative arts, stewardship of the land, community service, and much more.
The Children's Garden is a grassroots, volunteer effort by the parents, faculty and community of Mill Valley. The garden operates through private funds and donations and is supported by the Edna Maguire PTA - a 501 3 (c).
Are you a parent of an Edna Maguire student interested in volunteering to help with the Mill Valley Children's Garden? Click here for more information, or contact Saor Stetler. Green thumbs are not required - all that is needed is a desire to have fun with the children in the garden while observing the cycles of nature.
