MV Children's Garden news from Lee Budish for the week of January 14, 2008.
REMINDER: Our wonderful GIVING TREE WEEK festivities begin on Saturday, January 19th, 9am until noon. It is an apple tree planting and garden work day together! We are planting heirloom apple trees and we are removing the dead trees. If you have loppers, pole pruners, and/or gloves, please bring them! We need all the tools we can get for this major winter clean up as we prepare for Spring planting. Bring your camera, too! See you on Saturday!
Tool Cleaning: Near the shed, you will notice the old worm box. Inside is sand and brushes for kids to clean their tools. Please have them clean and put away after each use. Thanks!
TO DO LIST 1. Pick up and compost the rotten persimmons.
2. Clean up the fallen leaves in Ms. Zimmer's garden and in the reading circle. Tell the kids they are cleaning their room and we are human vacuum cleaners (sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't).
3. Weed out succulent area under the persimmons tree.
4. Pull weeds from apple orchard, citrus trees. If in doubt on what it is, do not pull; do so only if you are 100% sure.
5. In the K area you will see farm animals made of terracotta. We need to weed that area and then amend with soil. Please take soil from the new pile near the artichokes; have the kids fill wheelbarrows maybe 4. K area needs massive weed pulling.
6. I expect more wood chips this week. We need to place them on the pathway between garden beds and citrus to keep those weeds down.
7. The weeds near the apple tree nearest the shed are out of CONTROL. Please tackle.
8. Keep searching for those snails and slugs in dark places. Promise: They are there!
More: It is football time and guacamole time! So save your avocado pits. You can anchor them with tooth picks and put them in a shot glass with water at home or you can send to school so the kids can do it in class. Let's make avocado trees! See how to do in photo....
In the coming weeks, we will start greenhouse seeds. Yippee!
Problem: The darn lock. The new bike lock is jammed so I am trying to figure out if we can it fix before we get the bolt cutters. In the meanwhile, your garden keys will open the middle gate. Leslie has a garden key if you need. Please return to her and make sure you lock it up after you leave. Anyone have a better idea? Keys don't work, hidden keys don't work, chain and combination locks don't work. YIKES!
Stay tuned for our SEED SALE by Botanical Seeds. They will return 40% of seed sales to our garden! It will be coming soon on our web site! Thank you all so very much! Please feel free to call me on my cell 342-1870. MOST IMPORTANT THING IS TO HAVE FUN!
Warm Regards,
Lee Budish
